“Flaming” wet June!

After all the wet weather that we have had here in the UK everyone was looking forward to some Summer weather so that all the various shows and events could be enjoyed in glorious sunshine, in some cases this did happen but most suffered from bad weather. The Bath and West show last week was awash with water, however those who attended enjoyed the event. Remember we are getting very close to the ‘Nuffield 900′ to be held at the Cornish Tractor Club Annual Vintage Rally at Fraddon, Cornwall, on the 14th & 15th of June. A good showing of Nuffield and Leyland Tractors are expected to attend. The Club Stand will be in attendance, we look forward to meeting you all there. See the ‘Dates for your Diary’ page for more information.
Here are some pictures from the archive.

This picture was taken at Mosside Farm in 1973 during an exercise to produce a TV advertisment. It shows the range of Leyland Tractors with all the Training and Demonstration staff members

A Nuffield 4/65 tractor in the paint plant at Bathgate

Ready for its new owner this 4/65 is about to come off the end of the assembly line in 1968

Tom Wade with his 1975 Leyland 255 rotovating, it was bought in 2007 as a ‘non runner’. Tom repaired it and fitted a hydraulic unit off a later 272 Synchro, this has given him position control and a much more capable tractor with better PTO engagement

Rick Cobley sent this picture in of a Nuffield with a 6 Cyl engine fitted

This months selection of pictures include two from the archives and five Nuffield and Leyland owners pictures.

The very first prototype Nuffield - TRX1- This picture was taken in 1946. After field trials and a few cosmetic changes the Nuffield Tractor went into production in late 1948 when steel became available after the second world war.

After 15 years of production at Ward End the Government of the day built a new factory at Bathgate in Scotland. This picture shows the very last 10-60 coming off the production line at Ward End.

Hans Haapakoski from Finland sent in this picture of his 4-60 with EKA rear loader and reverse drive, his other tractor is a 4-65 Bray 4WD conversion.

The next two pictures were sent in by C Van Der Ploeg from the Netherlands, the first shows his Universal Four before restoration, and;

The second after a painstaking and detailed restoration.

Thanks go to Trevor McBurney for this very original looking Cantatore 470 Super 4WD. These tractors were built in Italy and although not many were made some still survive.

Just to prove that old Leylands are not just for show Ronan Middleton puts his 262 to good use topping grass.

After the terrible weather that we’ve had here in the UK over the Easter Period, it’s time to enjoy the spring weather. Now that the clocks have changed to ‘Summer Time’ and the longer evenings are coming in it’s time to get out and think about continuing your restoration project or doing the gardening.
After some research and digging, a number of old Bathgate Factory photographs have been located, hopefully a few will be posted on this site next month!
In the meantime here’s a selection of pictures sent in by site visitors.
