Nuffield DL3 with Cantatore 4WD conversion

Nuffield DL3 4WD Conversion
As the caption shows this tractor, from Italy, is being offered for sale at the Cheffins Classic & Vintage auction at Cambridge on Saturday 16th April 2011
This 4WD Nuffield 3DL tractor achieved a very good price of £4,700.00

8th Vintage Tractor Show Newark – 13/14th November 2010
A very good display of 23 Nuffield and Leyland Tractors were shown along with the club stand. Pam and Graham looked after many visitors, took club subscriptions and signed up new members. Old friends met and discussed old times, new friends were made and many questions answered.
Roger Ball brought his immaculate Nuffield 4/65 all the way from Devon and took away the Nuffield and Leyland Tractor Club Trophy for the best Nuffield on the stand. His tractor really is a credit to his dogged ability to make parts not available, source difficult to get parts and his paint spraying is as good as many a professional paint shop.

Cambridge sale of Vintage and Classic Tractors – 16th October 2010
At last Saturday’s auction of classic and vintage machinery this Leyland 485 was offered for sale. It was exported to New Zealand in 1976 and returned to the UK earlier this year. One of only four 485s built it is a very, very rare tractor. Its condition is fair and has had a retro fitted Synchro gearbox. Apart from a number of cosmetic problems, non standard wheels and evidence of years of hard work it is a very complete tractor, it even has the large cast weight fitted under the front end. This weight is often missing off 485 & 4100 tractors and is impossible to replace. The cab is untidy with the rear panel missing but otherwise in sound condition. There are about 4600 hours showing on the ‘Clock’.
Despite reaching bids of £19,500.00 it failed to reach its reserve, the auctioneer tried hard to increase the bids, stating that they were very close to the reserve, but to no avail. The under bidders were encouraged to talk to the vendor to see if a deal could be arrived at.

Cambridge sale of Vintage and Classic Tractors – 24th June 2010
The Cambridge sale of Vintage and Classic Tractors was held on Saturday the 24th of April. The sale attracted a large crowd of potential buyers and many visitors. There were 3,335 items of farming equipment, parts, literature, models and memorabilia for sale, this included 325 tractors and other vehicles. There were 15 Nuffields, 20 Leylands and 9 Marshall tractors entered in the sale. Bidding was brisk with good prices being paid for tractors in workable condition, tractors to be used for parts and possible restoration brought market value. There was one exception, a partially dismantled and incomplete Leyland 4100 returned £12,500.00! It did have a retrofitted Synchro gearbox, front end chassis weight, fuel tank and the front wheel bevel drives & shafts. Most of the rest was missing including the complete hydraulic system.

The purchaser of this 4100 ‘Basket case’ obviously saw potential in it or needed spare parts.

This Leyland 272 Synchro was sold for a very reasonable £4,200.00

These assorted 2100s and 285s were sold for between £650.00 and £4,000.00 depending on condition. Some suffered from many years of hard work and neglect others were capable of being put back to work again after some care and attention. Other Middleweight tractors reached between £1,000.00 and £2,300.00.

The Steyr based D944 failed to reach its reserve, however the two 904XLs went under the hammer for £5,000.00 and £6,200.00. A 854 and a 100-4 were sold for £5,800.00 and £9,200.00 although there was a HPI report on the 854.

A 132 and a 264 Marshall tractors attracted a lot of bids and were eventually sold for £3,450.00 and £1,650.00 respectively. A further Marshall 602 went to its new owner for £2,900.00.

The 7th Newark Vintage Tractor and Heritage Show
Once again the 7th Vintage Tractor and Heritage Show at Newark Show Ground was a great success with a record number of tractors, implements, displays of all sorts, trade stands, animals, Saturday Auction and the Sunday ‘Sortout’ sale. The Nuffield and Leyland Tractor Club Stand was exceptionally busy with technical enquiries, membership re-newals and new memberships taken out, not to mention a near sell out of sweatshirts, fleeces, hats, mugs etc. etc.
The judging for the Nuffield Cup was a very difficult task owing to the number of tractors which were in contention, finally though, a decision was taken and the award was made to James Costello for his 1965 Nuffield 10/60 tractor, shown below.
Mr Graham Hill from Tayside brought his impressive Leyland 4100 to the show for all to see. He has recently aquired this tractor from a dispersal sale in Wales, he paid top money for a tractor which has been fully restored to very near its original condition.
The next picture was taken during a slack period at the end of the show when everybody could start to relax after the very busy two days.
The dates for the 2010 show have been announced, they are 13/14th of November. Make a note in your diary and come to this, not to be missed, show. If you have a Nuffield tractor that you think is a contender for the ‘Nuffield Cup’ enter it for the show and keep your fingers crossed! When a tractor is judged the judges look for a tractor which could be in ‘Off farm’ condition or ‘Fully Restored’ or anywhere in between, just as long as it’s complete and as near original as possible.

Tractor Collection for sale
Graham Hill from Fife in Scotland is selling some of his extensive collection of Nuffields and Leylands, see the For Sale and Wanted section for details. Graham also recently paid £33,000.00 for a restored Leyland 4100 at a recent auction sale in Wales.

Portuguese Plough
Mr English, from Bathgate in Scotland, recently purchased a BMC Mini tractor witha single furrow reversible plough. He would like to know if anyone has any information relating to the plough. It has a manufacturers plate with the following stamped on it; Ribatego, Benavente, Made in Portugal. Any information please to; contact@thenuffieldandleylandtractorclub.co.uk

Prototype BMC Mini Tractor
Recently the BMC Mini tractor pictured below has been restored to it’s original condition by John Poulter, on behalf of Adrian Bentley. It can be identified as a prototype by the 8 stud rear wheels. Interestingly it has a 9 speed gearbox whereas the first ptototype had six speeds. It’s thought that three of these tractors are in existance, they were designed and developed by the Harry Ferguson Research Foundation. Does anyone know anything about these tractors and have any information that we can add to the story.

A Golden Year for Collings Brothers
Collings Brothers of Abbotsley, St Neots, Cambridgeshire, celebrated their Golden Jubilee in 1980. The company, which for many years had been the main agent for Nuffield and Leyland Tractors, was built from humble beginnings and even today, in 2009, still retains a family atmosphere and friendly approach to their customers.
To commemorate the occasion Collings Brothers commissioned Leyland Tractors to build a Golden Jubilee 282 tractor. This Bathgatefactory built tractor, shown below, was sprayed Metallic Gold with Black chassis. After a few years work it suffered a major cab fire and lay derelict for a number of years. However its present owner restored it to its original specification and colour then put it back to work.
Due to the timing of its build in 1980 many people believed it to be the new colour for the new range of tractors to be introduced in 1981! This was incorrect and the new tractors were introduced at the Smithfield Show in 1981 as the Golden Harvest range of tractors.
This, one off, very rare 282 is still working today somewhere in East Anglia, England.

Red Diesel Fuel and Classic or Vintage Tractors
A recent UK Government document has been issued on the subject of ‘Red Diesel’ (Rebated Diesel). As usual with any ‘Government’ publication it’s not what it says but what it doesn’t say!  Basically the facts are as follows; If a Tractor is NOT being used directly for an ’Agricultural’ activity then it must use ‘White’ diesel.  Therefore when you carry out a road run, drive to a show or use the tractor for any non-agricultural activity then white diesel is the order of the day.  What the position is if you drive to a ploughing match and then carry out an ‘Agricultural’ activity by ploughing the field is unclear! To be ‘Safe’ white diesel should be used, then you can’t be wrong.
Further information can be obtained from the following web sites; www.naac.co.uk or www.hmrc.co.uk on this last site enter ‘Fuel for road vehicles’ into the search window, then follow the links.
